In today’s post, we will describe the method of repairing the screen of an iPhone X on your own.
- Before you begin the process, the battery percentage should be below 25 as a charged battery can catch fire or explode if punctured accidentally. Next, switch off the phone
- Remove the pentalobe screws on the bottom of screen
- Loosen the adhesive strips of the display using a heat gun or dehydrator. Use the heat gun for 20 seconds on low setting while the dehydrator should be used for 20 minutes
- Get a single suction handle and press it to the bottom of the phone. Be careful about avoiding the curved portion of the glass
- In case the glass is too badly shattered and the suction cup is failing to press against it, you can cover the glass with clear packing tape before applying suction
- You can also use a strong tape instead of the suction cup
- If these two methods fails, use superglue to attach the suction to the broken screen
- Pull up the suction cup applying firm but constant pressure. A slight gap will be created between the front panel and the rear case. Take an opening pick and insert it into this gap
- Remember that the adhesive between holding the display in place can be quite strong. This is why it takes significant effort to create a gap. If you are experiencing much difficulty, you can apply more heat and gently rock the screen up and down to loosen the adhesive further
- The opening pick should be slid along the lower left corner and up the left edge of the phone. This will effectively slice through the adhesive holding the display in place
- Do the same with the right side of the phone
- Lastly, slide the pick along the top edge of the phone to loosen the last of the adhesive
- Be careful about not inserting the pick too deep. It should not surpass the bezel of the phone
- Remove the suction cup from the screen and swing open the phone like a book. Lean the display against something
- Remove the screws of the logic board connector bracket
- Pull off the battery connector from its socket on the logic board. Bend the connector a bit away from the logic board. It can provide power to the phone upon contact
- Disconnect the front panel sensor assembly connector, OLED panel cable connector, and digitizer cable connector
- Disconnect the front panel sensor assembly flex cable by separating its adhesive
- Remove the display assembly
- Remove the screw near the infrared camera spot at the back of the display assembly
- Remove the small metal grounding clip beneath if it didn’t come out already
- Remove the screws keeping the speaker and sensor assembly in place
- Gently pry off the speaker by flipping it over; down and away from the top of edge of the display
- Using a dehydrator or heat gun, loosen the adhesive securing the sensors
- Use a spudger to slide underneath the flex cable below the microphone
- Without straining the flex cable, gently twist to separate the microphone
- Using an opening pick, separate the proximity and light module from the front panel
- With tweezers, separate the ambient light sensor from the display
- Make sure the white diffuser strip has also come off
- Remove the entire earpiece speaker and front sensor assembly
- Install the new screen
- Follow the method in reverse to reassemble the phone
Cost of Restoration
Whether you go to Apple or use a DIY method for restoration, it can take a considerable cost. The more complex components the brand use, the more expensive it becomes to replace broken screens.
